The Library History Round Table of the American Library Association has named Dr. Hermina G. B. Anghelescu as the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Service in Library History Award. This award honors the career of a person who has a lifetime of scholarship and service in the field of library history. This non-monetary award is given to an individual who has a record of contributions; who demonstrates length, breadth, and depth of involvement in library history; and who has had a significant impact on the work of the ALA Library History Round Table or on the library history community at large.
Anghelescu has made extraordinary global contributions to the advancement of library history through teaching, service, and professional leadership. Following a successful early career at the National Library of Romania, she pursued her Ph.D. in the United States and has since served as a faculty member at Wayne State University, where she has mentored generations of humanities librarians and researchers from around the world. An internationally respected scholar of library development in Central and Eastern Europe, Anghelescu has significantly expanded the visibility of underrepresented regions within the field. Her service to IFLA’s Library History Section—first as Secretary, then Chair, and later Convenor—demonstrates her sustained leadership in curating scholarly exchanges across international contexts. She has organized panels and publications that highlight overlooked institutions and geographies, from parliamentary libraries to the cultural heritage of countries like Cuba and Ukraine.
Anghelescu’s editorial work has further strengthened the infrastructure of library history scholarship. She has long served on the editorial boards of major journals, including Library Trends, Library and Archival Security, and Libraries: Culture, History, and Society (LCHS), LHRT’s peer-reviewed journal. Through these roles, she has advocated for cultural preservation, connected emerging voices to publication opportunities, and promoted awareness of global crises impacting libraries and cultural institutions. Her behind-the-scenes efforts have been instrumental in shaping editorial policy, fostering scholarly collaboration, and elevating international discourse. She is one of a vanishing breed of librarians who has participated in writing national bibliographies and short title catalogs but still understands and teaches out modern library trends as well.
Several of Anghelescu’s colleagues attest to her impact as an educator, colleague, and ambassador for library history. She exemplifies distinguished service by building interdisciplinary and international bridges, championing unheard voices, and modeling generous, visionary leadership and mentorship in the field of library history.
