Following the closure of the Brownless Biomedical Library in July 2024, the building will be removed during the quiet Summer 2024/2025 period. Works are expected from 18 November 2024 to early Q2 2025. This period was chosen to ensure minimal disruption to the staff, student and visitor campus experience. If you are unsure why the library closed, you may wish to read this information page.
The proximity of the Baillieu Library to the Brownless site means that some minor disruption may be experienced by those using or working in the library.
Managing Minor Disruption to Baillieu Library Staff and Users
A disruption management plan is in place with the appointed contractor to ensure noise disruption does not exceed acceptable thresholds, so that the Baillieu Library experience can be managed and maintained. This includes the following measures:
Any excessively noisy works will be scheduled outside of University work hours, following consultation with Scholarly Services.
Noisy works will occur outside of Semester 2 and the Examination Period. Additional dates have been identified during supplementary examinations in neighbouring buildings.
Vibration is not expected to be felt within the Baillieu Library.
Alternative Study Spaces are Available (if Required)
With only minor disruption anticipated, students who wish to study at the Baillieu Library during this period are encouraged to do so. However, library users may wish to use alternative study spaces during this time. Students are welcome to study in any of the University libraries.
Additionally, numerous alternative informal study spaces are available throughout Parkville, including the Student Pavilion, Arts and Cultural Building, Building 168 and Building 189.
Raising Concerns During Works
Those using at the library are expected to continue to have a comfortable library experience. However, if you have any concerns about the level of noise disruption during works, please contact Andrea Phillips (Associate Director, Library Learning and Engagement) or Kylie Tran (Manager, Library Services and Spaces) who will interface with the Project Management team.
Any changes to the program following commencement of work will be communicated. We thank you for your patience during this time.
