Kanezane was a Young and powerful nobleman of the latter half of 12th century when Kamakura Government was established after the war between Genji and Heike. My purpose of this research is to follow his reading experience and find the meaning of it according to his diary Gyokuyo. Mainly he was affected by Chinese books of politics and history. In peaceful times when he was young and had nothing to do with politics, his sources of knowledge were his reading and conversation with the aged scholars, During the war, he continued reading but he thought much of the conversation with bureaucracy. After the war, we could not find any account on reading or conversation in his diary.

The editing method of Homotsu-shu is to put waka and narratives in the whole story according to the editer Yasuyori's taste. Influence from Ohjoyoshu was so important that it has a bibliography at the end of the volume. Yasuyori intended to compile Buddhism with Tendai-Jodo sect as leader. Besides, it was effected by Ohjo Koshiki by Eikan, Seigan Koshiki by Myoken, Homon Hyakushu by Jakuzen and others. Also it was interesting that it based on Shinshyozaifuku-innen-shu.

Kaneyoshi tended to be fond of "Yoyo-no-furugoto", to think much of Manyoshu and to respect The Tale of Genji, and tried to get Chinese culture. Having lost a lot of volumes of Tohkado Bunko during the war of Ohnin, he preserved books of history, ceremony and etc., and completed Kacho-yojo and Nihonshoki-sanso in Nara. He attempted to restore the ancient ceremonies through his knowledge that he had got by his reading, and encouraged to learn classics. He not only variegated judgment of waka meeting, but also gave a lesson how to live during war time. The essence of his thoughts could be found in Sayo-no-Nezame, Bunmei-ittoki and Shoudanchiyo which were dedicated to Tomiko Hino and Shogun Yoshihisa.

Teika's experience of reading in his youth was studied here. In this period, his important works are A Hundred Poems of First Learning, A Hundred Poems on Horikawain's Theme and also A Hundred Poems on Futamigaura. In these works and his diary Meigetsuki, we could say that he had studied all kind of classic literature, among which his favorite was Hakushi-monju. These studies were useful for him as a poet in a striking contrast to his proofreading of later time.

Onna San-no-miya's conception is not only an important affair in the second part of The Tale of Genji but also a latent factor for the third part in which kaoru is a hero. After she committed adultery with Kashiwagi, her conception as a result of the night had something to do with his dream of a cat, and miraculously Kaoru was born. It was said that such mysterious rendezvous as in dream brought a miracle of conception for one night. Thee heroines of adultries, Fujitsubo, Onna-San-no-miya and Ukifune composed poems in each of which the word "dream" was included. The purpose of this study is to follow the process from adultry to conception with the clue of the word "dream".
