By studying the materials for history, I've attempted to analyze the process of how Tametomo came to be adopted into Hogen Monogatari as a hero, I will also discuss the expressions and the time of the monogatari. The secret of making him a hero seems to lie in the fact that Tametomo, who is based on the local darkness, plays an active part in the light of the capital city, though only for a short period. Therefore it is impossible to discuss the growth of the heroic image without considering its relationships with the state of affairs in the Middle Ages.

The numerous setsuwa narratives inserted in the Enkei's Text are not always subordinate in their qualities. They are sometimes adopted into the main plot in order to respond to it and sometimes be enriched by the main plot itself. To study the structures of those setsuwa narratives leads us to the conclusion that Enkei's text is the result of a new reading of the older texts of Heike. I've pursued the relationships between the setsuwa structures and the new interpretation of the older texts.

I've analyzed "Tokuchojuin Setsuwa" from the viewpoint of a plot study. This setsuwa narrative has been regarded as a subordinate one in the story. But when we analyze its structure we can see an important theme-that the Throne should be assisted by the warrior family, which has the deities' aid. And from this theme, new concepts of narratives are created one after another, extending the world of monogatari. Setuwa narratives, formerly regarded only as materials of monogatari, are in fact the mainspring of enriching the world of monogatari.

Heiji Monogatari has many kinds of texts which are written in different narrartive styles, though having the mutual title and theme of the War of Heiji. Because the three are considered to be the representatives of Heiji Monogatari, I've studied the narrative method of the Eleventh Text in comparison with those of the First and Fourth Texts. Though the Eleventh Text consists of the stories taken from the First and Fourth Texts, it is not a mere mixture of those two, but has a quality of its own. Different from the others, it has the attitude of describing the War of Heiji from outside the monogatari world, of arranging the plot in a proper shape, and of trying to give a new interpretation on it.
