Utakaki is one style of the basic songs on which the ancient poetry was based. It is based on the principle of symmetry regulated by the question and answer form. The mechanism of Utakaki text is clear when the key word, which is the core of the symmetrical system, is correctly interpreted. Though Utakaki text has been read as poems which are chiefly related to the union of the two sexes, I consider it as a device corresponding to the various aspects of the rituals of "Kunimi" or "Utagaki".

I discuss the traditions and the styles of Setsuwa literature from two points: archetype and the temporal and spatial backgrounds. First, the archetype is found in the story structure of "The Discovery Story of the Two Kings of Oke and Woke" in the books Kojiki, Nihon-Shoki, and arimano-Kuni Fudoki; second, it was established with the same temporal and spatial backgrounds as medieval step-child stories such as Hachikazuki and Tanka poems in Manyo-Shu. I also discuss the styles of Kayo text and the tradition of the simile expressions by analyzing the Uta poem, King of Woke's self-introduction.

I pursue the characteristics of Mame-bito (a reliable person), who sometimes seems to be stupidly honest, as described in Genji Monogatari. I presume that those Mame-bito in Genji and the Mamenaram-Otoko in the "Quest for the Swallow's Koyasugai" in Taketori Monogatari are haunted by the spirits of Mame-bito in ancient stories who had visited Hades called Kakurezato (the hidden village). Further. I discuss the "Mame" side of Hikaru Genji, who is thought to be Suki-bito (a person who always pursues love), which suggests that he partly belongs to Hades, and also the character Rokujo-In as a union of Mame-Gokoro and Suki-Gokoro.

The similarity of some chapters in Ise Monogatari and a volume of Genji Monogatari can be explained in terms of the " Monogatari" system, unlike the way it has been described from the chronological point of view. In my opinion, they have the symmetrical system and the tropological structure as their mutual characteristics.

Heike Monogatari is the form of Katari (narrative) literature, not only because it adopts a lot of traditional materials and that it was circulated by Biwa-Hoshi, but also because the narrative itself is the process, method, material and text of Heike Monogatari. When we look at Heike Monogatari as Ikusagatari, we find a characteristic system and structure unique in itself, and in the foundation there are structures of Monogatari and Mukashigatari.

Waka poems and fragments of Waka in Makura-no-Soshi can be regarded as an impulse to create the atmosphere, the center of which is Empress Teishi. Waka poems are also the device of the author to make consummate responses to the courtiers' questions, which she often takes pride in. The author's knowledge of normative expressions and literature history supported the smart responses. The descriptions in the work, however, are the process of producing new words and new situations through the sensitive dialogues between the traditional Waka poems and the questions aroused in everyday affairs.
