The kana-prose language of the literature of narrative [monogatari] and diaries [nikki] produced in the Heian period is substantially identical for both genres. So much so that attempts, which are frequent enough, to distinguish monogatari from nikki by the presence or absence of the factor of "fiction" are bound to yield very little appreciable results. No more satisfactory are distinctions which appeal to the differrences between alleged prototypes such as uta(poetry/song) or katari(narration). The problem seems to consist rather in the way the space and time of the language of each work is delimited. More concretely, the mode of existence of the characters of nikki and monogatari, hinges on the extent to which they are "theatrical" persons. This would appear to be the mode in which the fictionality of the literary work could be measured. With the exception of the Tosa Nikki, the confusion or interplay of Heian nikki literature with monogatari is a function of the clarity with which the authors of such works perceived this problem. And it was, certainly, the extreme clarity with which the authors of the "Hotaru" chapter of the Genjimonogatari understood this problem that enabled her to compose the seminal discourse on narrative/fiction contained in that chapter.

Two contradictory thoughts exist in Heike Monogatari. First,it is the idea that royal succession is innuenced by the law of causality, which is inconsistent with the sense of evanescence of life. From the standpoint of work itself, it is the confrontation between history and fiction ; usualness and unusualness ; the center and the limits. From the viewpoint of the formation process, it is the contradiction of consolation of "Mono" and "Mono" that is not consoled. The authority of the temples and the narrators that are subject to the authority of the temples. In other words, these are the written text and the narration. (Heike Monogatari is the first piece of literature in which the written text and the narration meet). Nevertheless, as long as Heike Monogatarii basically belongs to the narrator's point of view, it is the narrator's logic that supports the work from its depths. The historical appearance of the monogatari is made relative from inside the monogatari, so that the places of the two elements, historical facts and fiction, or usualness and unsualness are reversed. It is the structure of Heike Monogatari and the logic of monogatari that perpetually alters the written texts.

I dicuss the confrontation between the two characters in Rashomon(Akutagawa Ryunosuke). They are a manservant and an old woman ; one who tries to be overcoming things forever and one who tries to be protecting things forever(referring to "Saiho no Hito"). In other words, it is the confrontation between idealism and realism. With further analysis, we discover the fundamental theme of having to face order and disorder in the world.

To recognize the outer world is to possess an imaginary world. As long as we approach the outer world through the imagination, there will inevitably be prejudices. Nevertheless, prejudices should be used to approach the outer world. I dicuss how to deal with this problem in literature education and what primary materials should be used.

Kakuitsu-bon text is appreciated as the perfection of Heike Monogatari. I have chosen the setsuwa narratives of Shigechika, Koremori, Munemori and Shigehira. The themes of these narratives are agony of separation. I compare them with the Yashiro-bon text, the old style of Todo-kei texts. The Kakuitau-bon shows two tendencies : one is to elevate the plot to the expression level, and the other is to create a feeling of time and space in which the people in monogatari mutually possess the central character's death. This also includes the religious world. I describe it as a space-time that is unique in the world of setsuwa narratives. When the Yasaka-kei texts are included, it seems that Kengyos, who had great ability in appreciating art, supported the world of monogatari. This is aproposition on how to read Heike Monogatari in the future.
