Doke no Hana, Dazai Osamu's early masterpiece, is a story of a man called Oba Yozo. Yozo tries to commit a double suiside but survives in spite of his girl friend's death. The characteristic found in the structure of this novel is that the narrator of the story freely explains and annotates the content and structure of the story he is telling. This is a typical text that is identified with "meta-fiction". It contains the actual novel text and a statement about how the novel was created. Discussion is made on this novel, refferring to the general theory of "metafiction."

Yokai-Ga is discussed in terms of Shingo Shinichi's vacillation between the "inside" (the tenement house)and the "outside" (the home town). His relationship with the laundry woman and her daughter is another point to be studied. By placing Yokai-Ga on the last stage of the tradition of Painters' Novels, it is possible to illustrate Hakucho's concept of reality derived from the world of Yokai-Ga.

"Bupposo" includes topics such as Muzen, Bupposo, Kobo Daishi, Tamagawa Poems, Koyasan and Hidetsugu. However, by talking about these topics, nothing becomes clear. This dilemma spoils the "certainty" of the work. Therefore "uncertainty" is a characteristic that symbolizes the period called "Kinsei." "Bupposo" was created to produce such "uncertainty " for the period.

There are two view-points taken by Shikibu in the descriptions of the court functions in Murasaki Shikibu Nikki. One; the view-point is to describe what Mrasaki Shikibu sees from where she exists. Two; the view-point is to describe objectively the whole Tsuchimikado Residence from the arrangements of the people and furniture in it to include the author as a part of the residence's existence. This is illustrated by placing the author above the setting and looking down upon it. The second view-point, however, is not based on her actual experience but is based upon her idea. Murasaki Shikibu's intent is to make a visual composition of the scenes inspired by the pictures of court functions. A consideration is given to the peculiarity of the structure and style of this work.

The volume of "Kuniyuzuri" is well-known for the description of the "fight for Ritsubo" The story reveals that the Koto Family takes the initiative in coming up with the conclusion to the problem of the investitude of the Crown Prince(by using the method of "Atemiya Kyukon-Tan"). Furthermore it explains that the victory of the Masayori Family is superficial and proves the relativity of their logic. The Koto Family's logic is also proven relative to the authority of the Royal Family, through the revelation of Toshikage's post-humous works and the lack of filial piety. The story, while explaining the superiority of Koto Famiry logic, makes it relative by insisting that nobody receives favor without permission from God. The plot of this story, which is planned to express that nothing is absolute, is deeply based on the realization of "Ku" in Buddhism, all closely associated with the volume of "Toshikage."
