Prior to the change in the superncial structure of the literary genres, there must have been the dissolution in word order and a fluctuation in the foundation of poetic vocabulary. The people in the field of Kagaku were probably the most sensitive to these first changes. Moire attention should be paid to the internal side of Insei period when a number of setsuwa narrative collections were produced. Energetically carried on at this time was Honsetsu or Monogatarization as it can be called. It became the bases for contemporary vocabulary. By discussing the meaning of the word "Honmon" used in the Insei period, the development of Honsetsu is traced.
A setsuwa narrative collection creates a world of monogatari telling that functions as a place for story telling. However, it sometimes forms the world of monogatari telling by erasing this "place," The initial "place" is called "the sphere of narration" because of its role in the ful fillment of structured expression. The erased "place" is called "the sphere of reading." It frees setsuwa narratives from the structured expression by erasing the "place" and enables the setsuwa narrative to create their own expression through the action of the people who enjoy reading them. They create a new "place" of monogatari. Based on the study mentioned above, the idea of the "sphere of reading" is proven by pursuing the 30th Dan of Ima Monogatari.
To illustrate the concept of monogatari literature, the form of the works, as well as the relationship between the title and the content, are analyzed. A change in narration occurs when a listener becomes the narrator. By taking random samples of the monogatari narratives from amongst the daily lives of the people, this change in narration is proven. An attempt to explain "Ba no monogatari"(the work that describes the spot of monogatari telling-a termmade by Mori Masato)is presented.
Komyotan narrative and its relationship with the "war chronicles" is discussed by analyzing the characteristics of the three old warriors : Tachibana Norimitsu, who wins a battle against burglars in the center of the capital city(Konjaku Monogatari), Sadohyoenojo Shigesada, who shoots Sadaijin Yorinaga in the Battle of Hogen (Gukansho) and Oba Kageyoshi, who is wounded in the fight with Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo in the Battle of Hogen (Azuma Kagami).
The study of medieval people's acceptance of contemporary literature reveals that the literary works of almost every genre Were popularized in the form of public entertainment. This is the phenomenon called "popularization syndrome." One of the elements in literature is the "sacred" element to stimulate people to be spiritually sublimated. The other "worldly" element is to entertain them. Medieval litera1ture was accepted where both sacred and worldly elements co-existed. Both aristocrats and common people supported it with their collective energy. The story tellng site becomes an important melting pot where medieval literature is born.
In the Enkyo text, there are many places where two heterogeneous plots appear simultaneously. These plots do not co-exist or become one plot. The fact is that one plot will I exist in its entirety within the other plot. This is the main characteristics of the Enkyo text. The Enkyo text is exemplified as an attempt to collect the episodes that have already been differenciated and to create one Heike world. To prove this, "Ujigawa"(Vol.9), "Tosabo Kirare"(Vol.12) and "Tsujikaze" (Vol.3) are analyzed. Also mentioned herein is the aspect of the Enkyo text as a variant text.
