Hatten has a dual structure which allows two different points of view to look at the reason for going to Karafuto for a cannery enterprise : one, to reestablish his life which was a failure ; the other, to practice his philosophical principles, Neither of the two standpoints is satisfactory in thoroughly understanding the work, though. The protagonist's advance into Karafuto is regarded at the same level as having relations with Otori. Both mean an attempt to recover the spiritual contentment in his own body. To achieve this recovery, the socially valuable enterprise and the choosing of Karafuto, the far-north, which is in extreme contrast to Tokyo, were necessary.
