Shukaku Hoshinno's Shinzoku Kokanki takes the form of a recorded talk between the Shinshu people and the common people which took place during the latter part of the Choyo Feast in the palace of Ninnaji in the second year of the Kenkyu era. The people, from the two different points of view, exchange opinions on secular historical facts and hidden Shingon Buddhist traditions which had been orally handed down. However, these fictional talks are written when Shukaku was not in the position of Hoshinno. He collected these hidden traditions because of his interest in both sacred and ordinary history. The existence of Shinzoku Chakugonki, Saki and Uki, as the companion volumes of the Shinzoku Kokanki is proved. These companion volumes do not take the form of recorded talk.

Rennyo was the eighth Honganji chief-priest. The known number of the records of Rennyo's words and deeds is much greater than those of any other priest. Using Rennyo's talks as the basic for discussion, each of the record keepers makes his own interpretation of Rennyo through his personal relationship with Rennyo or his relationship with the Honganji school system, Three of these record keepers are considered; Kuzen (one of Rennyo's attendants), Jitsugo (Rennyo's tenth son)and Katada Honpukuji monto (followers). How the historical surroundings influenced the heartfelt feelings between them and Rennyo is pursued. Also analyzed is their concepts of time and place in Rennyo's talks affected by their relationships with Rennyo.

The introduction of Uji Shui Monogatari has been discussed only from the viewpoint of its formation. This is an attempt to explain the work as a sort of myth, while reconsidering the value of the "Meguri Monogatari" standpoint. The significance of "Byodoin Nansenbo Kikigaki-banashi" by Minamotono Takakuni, which is found in the introduction, is illustrated by exemplifying various aspects of the work. For example; The contrast between "Kikigaki-banashi" and Uji Hozo is explained. The framework of "Meguri Monogatari" is constructed. The characteristics of Takakuni (the author), whose techniques of "shui" is somewhat similar to Sarugaku technique, are pointed out. The rituals of the boundary of Uji represented by the Imperial vma festival are described to explain time and place. The waterside story which corresponds to the stream of the River Uji is exemplified. The plot of the work is illustrated as flowing water.

The method of taking "Honsetsu" explodes during the lnsei period. However, the signs of "Honsetsu" have already been found in the time of the Uta discussions or Noin. There, the places of "Kagaku" talk mass-produce "Honsetsu" by inventing the sources of Uta poems as "Tenno" or "Nihon-ki", so that the "Furukoto" (the terms which are already out of use and hard to understand) may be used I as poetic terms. This is an attempt to research this situation of "Honsetsu" through some of the few sources left, such as Noin Utamakura.

Dialogue literature is defined as the literary works which are written in diaIogue form (talks such as mondo, zotanj meguri monogatari). It is based on the "ba" of fiction (fictional place and time). It also takes the people who carry the stories (a story moves from the questioner to the answerer, then to the narrator, then to the listener, and finally to the record keeper). This is an at, tempt to pursue the study of Buddhism in the Chuko period (the Heian era) and the methods of narration which helped this style of literature establish and develop. By showing concrete examples, Shukaku Hoshinno of Ninnaji and Monjiki written by Kakuin Ajari are discussed.

"More than forty years which have passed" in Senjusho, is considered to be a phrase quoted from "Tendai Goji Kyohan." In order to illustrate the aspects of Senjusho, which is defined as "the teachings of ordinary life" in contrast to the "Hokekyo", the following characteristics are exemplified ; the narratives in Okagami, the monogatari viewpoint found in the volume of "Hotaru no Maki" in Genji Monogatari, and the acceptance of the old interpretations and notes of Genji Monogatari in medieval ages. The "Kyogen Kigo" viewpoint is also used to discuss the work. At the same time, the aspects of the narrator referred to as "Gusha" are analyzed in terms of the functional elements. The structure of the work is explained from the standpoint that it duplicates the image of "Ojosha" who takes after that of Saigyo.
