It the ritual book of the Heian Era, the order of a ritual named "Gyotai Gyoboku" is mentioned. It is the ritual to foretell the peacefulness of Tenno's health. In the "Kudensho," a tradition is handed down as follows: Miyaji (the Shinto priest who is in charge of the ritual) was to predict once "every certain period of time" that Amaterasu Omikami will curse Tenno's body. The mythological style of Kojiki and Nihonshoki, which illustrate Amaterasu Omikami from the expressions of the violent goddess. The aspect of Amaterasu Omikami as the violent goddess, however, is revealed in the secret rituals concerning the Tenno's body.

In order to make out the delicate relationships between the essence of poetryand that of Tenno system, it is helpful to make a consideration of the "otherworld" which Origuchi Shinobu was eager to discuss. In his thesis titled "Theconcept of the other world from the viewpoint of racial history," Origuchi regardsthe other world as the world in an absolutely different sphere, and associates itwith hit theme of "the maturity of the soul." An attempt is made to apply thisidea of Origuchi's to the interpretation of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro's Uta poems, and to discuss the nature of the poetry itself that always has the momentaimed to the "hongen", and how the Tenno system is related to it.

Keiji Yasutane's works probably have two different streams. One of them, Iketeiki, whose main topic is about the cities, is written from the viewpoint of a "Ritsuryo" official in the position of "Naiki." The work must be read on the basis of that viewpoint, because it has, to a great extent, a characteristic of a warning book in the last year of the Enyu Era which was the year of political unrest. Therefore, the "heaven" and "people", which have been paid little attention to so far, are discussed here as the signficant terms to connect the two topics: the cities in the former part and the quiet life in the latter part. This work should be reread in a new light by pursuing the quality of the attitude toward the cities.

How was the death of Tenno or Joko described in the dynastic literature? "Ganmon" was accepted as the superior literay piece in contemporary society. Because Ganmon is written as a ceremonious statement to be presented at the Buddhist memorial services in front of many people, it is typically and systematically stylized, and it reflects the ideas of the period remarkably. Through the analysis of the "Ganmon", the descriptions of the image of Tenno and his death are discussed. This is an approach to an aspect of the Tenno concept found in ancient Japanese Literatire.

Omura Shot is placed in the Post-Sino-Japanese-War literature. The story is told by Second Lieutenent Omura in the first person. The Second Lieutenant was a "Tenno's soldier" first, but he unconsciously "deviates" from this and begins to possess the "mutuality of the sentiment." Then, by losing this "mutuality of the sentiment," he falls into misery and nihilism. This state of the protagonist overlaps that of the people just after the Sino-Japanese War. In this respect, this work has been highly appreciated. However, Omura's "mutuality of the sentiment" is a spiritual basis to support the Tenno system as well. Therefore, Omura Shoi presents a warped viewpoint regarding the Tenno System. The complications found in the work will be a start to revaluate the other literary works of the post Sino-Japanese War.

The whole plot of Shanghai is constructed with the assembly of the chapters, each of which is either the story of Sangi or Kotani or Osugi. In this essay, the story of Sangi being discussed as the axis, the aspect of the subject which floats about in the air of Shanghai is pursued. Though each story has its own orientation, the mutual point is also remaked: realization and discovery of "skin" and "flesh" as a Japanese race. Shanghai has the viewpoint like that of a good camera, which moves about freely from one level to another and it excels old fictions of Watakushi Shosetsu in its structure. However, the fictional field of ideology it reached also has such a weakness that it is absorbed and destroyed by the Tenno System.

It is necessary to give up our attitude to look upon Tenno system as the state itself, sublimity and the symbol, and to have a more objective attitude about it. (1) In Ueda Shozaburo's education review from 1935 to 1938, the criticism against the "Hermeneutics" in Japanese language education is found. What was expected of young teachers is also described, besides Ueda's concept of the literature teacher and literature teaching. (2) Further back to the period from 1930 to 1933, there were magazines titled "New Education" and "The Factory of Ideas". The criticism against the Japanese language textbooks found in these magazines, and their pioneering and independent way of editing are discussed. "Shinko Yomikata(new reading materials)" including the work of making materials for outdoor education such as "Pioniriu Tokuhon" are illustrated. The opinions expressed in those magazines criticize the fact that schools and teaching materials are the very means of producing Tenno system, nationalism and ideology of bourgeois society. Also discovered is the beginning of the large-hearted practical attitude to recognize educational elements in facts and realities and use them as teachingmaterials.
