The evil spirit of Rokujo-no-Miyasundokoro is something unique, being deeply related to the whole structure of Genji Monogatari. It is understood that the story of the ghost (when Rokujo is still alive) in "Aoi-no-maki" has influence on Murasaki-no-Ue. However, the same effect is given by the story of the ghost(after Rokujo is dead) in "Wakana-Part 2." And far from it, Rokujo-no-Miyasundokoro has an ability to always influence Murasaki-no-Ue even when she is not a ghost. In this essay, it is shown that Rokujo-no-Miyasundokoro functions as Murasaki-no-Ue's shadow.

There are some notice able plans in the Engyo text of Heike Monogatari vol.4. One, "Daito-Konryu-Setsuwa" is connected to Takakura-In's visit to Itsukushima Shrine while the other texts explain it in relation to Chugu's childbirth. Two, the Kyohei-Yurai story of Yorimasa is used to conclude the series of" Yorimasa-Mochihito-O Kyohei-tan." Three, "Tsukimi-Setsuwa" is followed by "Toren-Setsuwa," which never appears in the other texts. Four, "Tosen", "Mononoke", "Aozamurai's Dream" "Hayauma" and "Tsubakurotan-Setsuwa" are all included in the fourth volume, while they are carried in the fifth in many of the other texts. A discussion is made on what sort of plot sustains these new plans.

As everyone knows, it is pointed out that the "shadow" of "minken" (civil rights) is cast on Hakai. In my opinion, to interpret the "shadow" as a hidden image of the work and to pursue the father's story will show another structure of the work clearly. By explaining the father's "anger" brought about around 1884 when many "aggravation affairs" happened, "kaiho-rei" (law of liberation), which encourages the father to extend his illusion of "equality" on to the level of "minken", is grasped as a message from "Kimi" who spread the illusional idea of "Ikkun Banmin." The meaning of the father's death (which is planned on the Tenno's birthday) is analyzed, and what lies in the "depth" of the words of the commandment given to Ushimatsu by the father, is pursued as well.

Kokyo(by Rojin) has characteristics as follows: one, the foolishness of the people during the final years of the Shin Dynasty, typified by Jundo and Yan-Obasan. Two, "I" is not the protagonist as in a novel which describes the author's state of mind, but it functions as a standpoint of his expressions to sustain the realities of Jundo and so on. Three, Rojin's lyrical and humorous style found in Jundo and Yan-Obasan shows the combination of his ability not to be involved in the object of description but to recognize the reality, and his sensitivity as a poet. If these characteristics are appreciated, Kokyo is effective as a teaching material from the standpoint of teaching an attitude to reading Kindai period novels.

How the Tenno system lodged itself inside the literary men and led them to cooperate with the wars is discussed. Exemplifying Tokutomi Roka and Natsume Soseki, it is explained that the writers in the Meiji Era accepted Tenno into the tradition with veneration. The writers in the Taisho Era, however, had a strong consciousness of individuality and anti-authoritarianism, while having a feeling of nostalgia for the tradition. In the 2nd decade of the Showa Era, the literary men's "poetical spirit" urged them to cooperate with the war, as exemplified in Takamura Kotaro, Sato Haruo and Mushakoji Saneatsu. Shiga Naoya is discussed as one who contrasts with them.
