Yumiko holds arsenious acid in her mouth, but it's not a lethal dose. This action of using real poison to pretend to kill herself explains Yumiko's true personality. Yumiko is described as a very tricky character. It deserves our attention that the narrative uniquely gives an impression that even the affair of Kurenaimaru is a trick plotted by Yumiko. At the same time, the members of Kurenai-Dan, one of whom is Yumiko, being set up to be actors and actresses in this novel, the author tries very hard to describe scenes. How are these two characteristics related with each other? It is explained that there lies the author's intention to exceed the realism.

"I" in Kankan-mushi is not illiterate, which shows the difference between himself and the other mushi(insect). In those days in America, letter-recognition tests were given as a means of restriction of immigrants. For Arishima Takeo, this difference was quite significant. The difference in this point between "I" and the other mushi is pursued to prove their difference in the way of looking at objects. The mushi stare fixedly at objects and stare back when they are stared at. But "I" has a different way of looking at objects. This difference between them is most clearly illustrated in the scene of Petonikov being defeated. Distortion of the chronological structure in the story enables "I" to avoid witnessing the affair with his own eyes. This unreal structure of time comes from the fact that Arishima didn't consider the mushi's so-called "legal sanctions" permissible. Arishima's attitude against "the mushi's violence" is suggested in his letters to Tilda. That's why Kankan-mushi is nothing more than an elevation of "I"'s feelings, though chronological distortion is found inside the work.
