Reading is synonymous with the reader's creation of the world out of the work of literature. The created world in turn reflects the mind of the reader-creator, that is to say, his critical spirit. In other words, recreation of an imaginary world through reading is an act of criticism. It is important and effective that reader sets his own unique viewpoint for interpretation, instead of accepting the preconceived one designated by the author of the text. I have attempted to prove it by considering the interpretative possibilities offered by such reading materials as The Hail in Early Spring and An Errand for a Pair of Gloves.

Multiplicity of reading realizes its best meaning as a starting point of conversation and mutual criticism. But, in effect, the phrase is used as an excuse for defending one's arbitrary reading or committing the same old misreading as before under the pretext of "multi-layered reading." Many readings of Rashomon overlook the fact that the problem of whether the hooligan's "degradation" will lead to "starvation" or "crime" constitutes a mere surface of the story. Pointing that out, I will argue for the importance of a through confrontation between a teacher and a teacher, or a teacher and a student, in the act of reading.

At present, education of literary material is split between the criticism of the exacting attempt to draw one "right" conclusion and the position that opposes such a criticism. The former, reflecting the recent popularity of poststructuralist textual analysis, has become influential. At the same time, that tendency is criticized for inducing an anarchical freedom of reading. This condition itself forces the teachers at present to suffer from the syndrome of internal decay, in correspondence with the emotional emptiness demonstrated by children. How shall we overcome the present predicament of both teachers and students? I have attempted to suggest pragmatic and concrete measures of overcoming through positing an appropriate worldview.
