In the times when Yoshimune the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa Dynasty reigned, an ukiyoe style of picture called "ukie" was popular. In this essay, I will focus on this fashionable style of drawing in the sub-culture of the Edo Period so as to reconsider the perspective as the most imprinted aesthetic imperative. My point is to examine it in Western and Japanese paintings as a visual principle, as an institution - social, representational, paradigmatic, educational - and as a world view.

Kei-no-kimi commits suicide at the opening of "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura" because she thinks her self-sacrifice will save Yoshitsune from confrontation with Yoritomo. But it is not until the Kyoho to the Enkyo or Kanei Era - the period after Chikamatsu Monzaemon, usually called the Gassaku Period - that she was considered as an important character in the joruri performance. The discovery of the woman in this period seems to have opened up new possibilities for joruri since it gives a profound meaning to the original text and presents the drama of the Yoritomo-Yoshitsune feud from a new angle. In this essay, I will examine the mutation of her representation in the scene of the night attack at Horikawa, where Yoritomo sends assasins to kill Yoshitsune, tracing it through Azuma-kagami, a popular version of Heike-monogatari, Genpei-seisuki, diverse ballads, Kojaku-bukyoku, the ancient joruri and finally the joruri of the Gassaku Period. In doing so, I will discuss the influence the Gassaku Period's discovery of Kei-no-kimi has brought about in the joruri performance.

Manyoshu-tou is Fujiya Onjo's last annotation book published in the sixth year of the Bunkyu Era. It is certainly one of the most outstanding in the Edo Period. But strangely, although it is an annotation on poems, the annotator doesn't use the method "ichiritsu" (unity of annotating style) developed in Hyakunin-isshu-tou. In order to explicate this seemingly aberrant indifference to that method, I studied the text's relation to Kojiki-tou, which is another text supposedly written by the same author about the same time. It is interesting that the relation between these two books changes after completing the draft of Manyoshu-tou, now known as its different version.

A series of actual events are narrated in Hokkai-idan; Laksman's visit to Nemuro in the fourth year of the Kansei Era, Rezanov's arrival in Nagasaki Port at the beginning of the Bunka Era, the Russian fleet's attack off Sakhalin in the 34th year of the Bunka Era. This narrative's author was a professional storyteller of Osaka, who was called Nanho. As he could get only a poor amount of date, Nanho exerted his imagination to fill the blanks of the unknown parts of those historical events. He was executed for this act of forging. His technique of making a pseudo-history is to use the original data in some parts and interpolate them in other parts for the effect of actuality. The sea battle between the Japanese and Russian fleets is also fiction, but we can appreciate the author's virtuosity in storytelling in this narrative's climax.

Various kinds of parting are described in the Etsuji part of Okuno-hosomichi. This contributes to making the meaning of travelling in Etsuji greatly different from that in Mutsu or Dewa. In this essay, I have made an attempt to analyze the mode of narrating in each scene of separation and the relation of those scenes. Especially I focused on the scene of Ichishin, as it seems the key to understand wholly the expression of separation in the Etsuji part. There the protagonist narrates diverse forms of parting and gradually internalizes separation itself. I hope my interpretation can give a hint to understanding the essence of the wandering poet Basho's style.
