In the world in which the rule of justice is in decline, a neglected intellectual turns to Buddhism. While I see in such a faith the ideal of founding a Buddhist nation reflected, I will also draw attention to the fact that at the end of the story, the protagonist's playing of koto, urged by his feeling of filial love, cancels all the ambitions to found a nation. Concerning the two factors affecting the cultural tenets of Zomatsu, i. e., the sense of a Buddhist nation and the feeling of filial love, I have made a comparative study of Utsuho Monogatari and Chunen's Letter Entreating the Voyage to China written by Yoshishige Yasutane, arguing how these two factors functioned as original forces behind the creation of Utsuho Monogatari.

Saigyo Hoshi Shuka, now preserved at Tenri library, has been underestimated as a secondary text whose selection was copied from Saigyo Monogatari. But this book demonstrates a number of characteristics, including the omission of fictitious desciptions made to prepare Saigyo's poems for the inclusion in Shinkokinshu. For that reason, the book can be considered as an important key to speculating on the original shape of Saigyo Monogatari. This paper will reevaluate this book, attempting to reconsider the intentions underlying the formulation of the books of Saigyo Monogatari.

The Bele of Kokucho, Frequently mentioned in Edo Literature, is the bell to keep hours first installed in the town of Edo. During the years of Horeki, a rumor run about the daughter of the bell-ringer being a hose-necked monster. The rumor seems to have been quite popular, as a number of literary works record the episode. This paper attempts to trace the literary transcription of this common tale, especially focusing on the tale. The Strange Tale: the Legend of Gyokufu, pointing out the achievement of the early yomihon.

In the literary world after the Meiji Restoration, the problem of accepting rhetoric emerged. By the force of the theories promoting faithfulness to nature, including Naturalism, the tendency to reject rhetoric became stronger. In this essay, I will contemplate Shimamura Hogetsu's theory of rhetoric, pointing out his three important insights. The three points are: that the difference between the old and the new writings owes to the difference between the kinds of rhetoric employed by them, not to the employment or rejection of rhetoric; that new rhetorical devices were needed for the formation on the new Japanese language, and that the new literary genre of Naturalism which allegedly revealed truth especially required the new rhetorical system. I will discuss the process in which he came to attain them, as well as their content.
