We've been brought up in Japanese society where traditional values rule and people have little chance to make their own choices. The given facts are 1) we are born Japanese, 2) we grow up in a Japanese climate, 3) we share a common way of thinking through the use of the Japanese language. These facts have passed as the guidelines of our life. Many Japanese have tended to develop a rather restricting life philosophy based upon these given facts. In the field of knowledge so-called common sense, "what one really is" is easily substituted with "what one should do". In my opinion, Japanese literature was formed as a system of knowledge akin to common sense. That's why it lacked critical attitude and played a role as an innocent advocate of conservative ideologies. I propose Nichibunkyo tried to rearrange the existing system of knowledge with critical eyes, open up a new way of being, and seek for universal values.

It was Saigo Nobutsuna who first introduced the evidential approach into the study of Japanese literature and opened up an entirely new field of study of classical literature. Saigo started with critique of Motoori Norinaga's Japanology and tried to overcome his negative heritage through structuralism. Saigo created the foundation for today's reading of Kojiki as a self-contained system.

I will discuss in this essay Saigo Nobutsuna's A Literary History of Old Japanese Literature to reconsider the studies and education of Japanese literature led by Nichibunkyo. I chose the book because it went through three revisions. By taking a closer look at each version, it will become clear that writing a literary history is a means of reinterpreting a text with a look toward and from the outside. I will focus on the interpretation of Genji Monogatari and argue for the evaluation of this book as a model for researchers of later generations.

The teaching of literature in universities has long been considered to be integrated with the studies of literature. However, I think what is needed today is to consider "teaching" of literature as an issue of "education". The emphasis should be put on the cultivation of students' thinking faculties, which is an indispensable part of literature studies. It is getting more and more difficult to delineate the definite field of literature both in "studies" and "teaching". I'd like to propose that on invigorating direction for "education" could be found in a new relativistic approach to literature.

I would like to examine political relationships in the classroom by closely looking at Hitofusa no Budo (A Bunch of Grape) by Arishima Takeo, (published in Akai Tori (A Red Bird), August, Taisho 9) and Chiisana Okoku (A Small Kingdom) by Tanizaki Junichiro (published in Chugai, August, Taisho 7). What I mean by "political" is a network of various power struggles such as those between male teachers and male students, those between male students and female teachers, and those between home and schools. It also refers to the rivalry between literature and education.

In this essay, I will analyze my own interpretation of postwar Japanese education on which I've formed the basis of my teaching practice and theory. Through this analysis, I would like to elucidate the problems I have had and think through how to solve them. I believe such an analysis will shed some light on the issues in Japanese education today.

Bunzo and Osei in Ukigumo aspire for a westernized "relationship between man and woman", but in reality both of them are not free from traditional values that restrain individual aspiration. Bunzo is deeply caught up in such time-honoured conceptions as "ie (family)" and "male roles". Osei, after all, can not escape from marriage which is old-fashioned and down-to-earth. This essay will analyze the duality between their ideal and their reality in terms of their relationships with their mothers. Bunzo sees in Osei fantasies of motherhood which mirror his yearnings for his mother back in the country. On the other hand, it is Osei's mother, Omasa, who leads the transformation of Osei.
