Here I will analyze the temporal and spatial logic of Miyagigatuka, one of the short stories collected in Akinari Ueda's Harusame-monogatari. Its temporal structure and spatial significance are centered on "utamakura," the names of the places which are conventionally used in poetry. So "utamakura" affects the meaning of the poem added at the end of the story. I will also consider the effect of the author's appearance in the poem.

Ichiyo Higuchi wrote Yamiyo for the magazine "Bungakukai" in 1895. In this text appear a lot of femmes fatales, and Oran is one of those fatal women. By comparing her with the heroines of some other literary works in "Bungakukai," I will make explicit the peculiar position Ichiyo's text occupied in the literary discourses of the middle Meiji Era.

In this essay, I will not discuss Toson Shimazaki's relation to France by the usual method of comparative literature because I don't think it productive any more. Instead I will make clear how his reports from France during World War I were integrated and modified into the public discourses in Japan. I put his correspondences in the context of the Japanese mass media, especially press reports of the war. The point is to understand how the public images of the war were formed through the mass media and how Toson's discourses were involved in such image-making. Even now "realities" are linguistically produced. So, I believe, it is not only a past question but also an actual one.

In January 1922, Ryunosuke Akutagawa made public Yabu-no-naka, a short story with pluralistic individualism where each character has his/her own position and viewpoint. Akutagawa suggested the same pluralistic idea in his other stories of the same year that there should be a distinct difference between individuals, cultures or generations. But in his travelogues Shanghai-yuki and Kamigami-no-bisho, published again in 1922, he showed the terror of crossing and consequently destroying the cultural boundary. It seems to follow that the author insisted on pluralism not because he had some respect for other peoples or nations, but just because he had strong anxiety about cultural borderlessness. After all, Akutagawa's pluralism comes from his desire for national identity.

Riichi Yokomitsu conceived the plot of Ryoshu under the influence of the ultrarightist Taiseiyokusan-kai Association which adapted the Shintoistic "misogi" ritual for their idea of body-politics. Indeed, the text was written, inspired by Katsuhiko Kakei's rediscovery of old Shintoism, actually a kind of syncretic fabrication. Kakei's assimilationism is directly reflected in the chapter four of Ryoshu where Catholicism is absorbed into old Shintoism.
