The style of Iwashimizu-monogatari, one of the Dynasty narratives of the Middle Ages, is to a large degree determined by its frequent quotations. It not just quotes from other Dynasty stories but foregrounds the very act of sampling them. Those textual fragments cut out of the original contexts are appropriated into a different kind of narrative. Thus, through Iwashimizu-monogatari, Dynasty narratives were transformed into another genre that can be called "pessimistic bachelor stories," in which heart-broken men come together and form their exclusive community.

As is well known, there is a close relationship between joruri plays and "ukiyo-zoshi" stories, most of which were issued by large publishers like Hachimonji-ya. Although much has been said about the influence joruri had on "ukiyo-zoshi," the influence of the latter on the former has been little mentioned. This essay will show how joruri plays were affected by "ukiyo-zoshi" stories, focusing on the relation of Kino-Kaion's and Chikamatsu-Monzaemon's plays to Hachimonji-ya books.

Tsujido-Hifushi's Tamasudare, a collection of ghost tales, was published in the first year of the Hoei Period. Many texts have been pointed out as its source books; Sento-shinwa, Sento-yowa, Sangoku-denki, Syaseki-syu, Konjaku-monogatari and so on. Here I would like to add to the list Shin-goen. Its influence is far from negligible because Tamasudare, especially as can be seen in its volumes 2-4, 3-2 and 3-3, very frequently quotes from Shin-goen.

In "Gokan" books, a kind of popular magazines in the late Edo Era, captions were usually added to the illustrations of stories. These captions not only turned pictorial images into words but also had a visual effect because of their peculiar arrangement of letters. Moreover, instead of captions, discourses quite unrelated to illustrations and stories (for example, jokes or advertisements) were sometimes inserted there. The space of captions thus had a flexible function to allow various "noises" to enter "Gokan" books.

Even in his late career Naoya Shiga continued to be praised as a great writer, although his creativity evidently began to decline, and a kind of fetish was created from his work. But in most cases Shiga's artistic greatness was attributed not so much to his art itself as to the atmosphere which surrounded the writer. Interestingly enough, during the late Taisho Period when Shiga's work was canonized, the reification of literature was rapidly going on. Then is it not possible to think that his "art" was antithetically articulated in the context of literary commercialization? Here I will read the contemporary discourses about Shiga's artistry and make clear the process of making art in the age of the commercialization of literature.

Osamu Dazai created a narrator "I" in his fiction who is obsessed with the idea, "I am all because I am nothing." This paradoxical narrator seems like money which is also almighty precisely because of its nothingness. Just as money lacks any substantiality and functions in circulation, "I" has no real self and exists only in relations with others. Considering the role of this selfless narrator or what can be called the "monetary self," here I will read Dazai's short story "Dangai-no-sakkaku."
