Long after written language was indroduced into Japanese, poems improvised at a party still retained an oral aspect. For example, Yamanoue-no-Okura's "Hien-ka" in Manyo-shu seems to be not so much written as spoken. Indeed, although it has been treated as a writing with the author's signature, the poem has a characteristic of a party song which was then popular. Comparing the style of "Hien-ka" with that of the party song, especially its peculiar suffix, here I will read the poem as a song.

Now that the argument that Heike-monogatari derived from narrations by biwa monks was completely disproved by recent studies, there returns this simple question: what is the narrative? To give an answer to it, this essay will examine the making of the Yashiro-bon version of Heike-monogatari, mainly reading its part which describes the Heikes' banishment from Kyoto. In so doing, it will be shown that the Yashiro-bon version is an open text which quotes, interprets, and reworks the Engyo-bon and other versions.

The point of this essay is to see Kenji Miyazawa as a belated Japanese in the Tohoku area, a place left behind in modernization of Japan, and to find in his imaginary community Ihatove the double function to memorize and forget this marginal place. In his two short stories "Futari-no-yakunin" and "Jugatsu-no-sue," in which his ambivalent attitude to modernization and assimilation is most apparent, the desire to maintain a community even in the modernized Tohoku can be read.
