Now that the argument that Heike-monogatari derived from narrations by biwa monks was completely disproved by recent studies, there returns this simple question: what is the narrative? To give an answer to it, this essay will examine the making of the Yashiro-bon version of Heike-monogatari, mainly reading its part which describes the Heikes' banishment from Kyoto. In so doing, it will be shown that the Yashiro-bon version is an open text which quotes, interprets, and reworks the Engyo-bon and other versions.
