In the first reading of Haruki Murakami's short story "Kangaroo-biyori," probably most readers may be favorably impressed with the honest nature of the narrator who does his best to realize a girl's wish to see a baby kangaroo. Closer reading, however, reveals quite a different scenario. The narrator uses the verbal strategy to convince others that he is sincere, and his apparently kind words and acts are always based on self-righteousness. The narrator's plot is also the story's one. For the reader feels torn between the two readings, and this double plot challenges his or her way of thinking.

What does literature education need now? Here I will critically argue about the present conditions of literature teaching and consider a new direction which it should take. Although it is not easy to find an alternative to the established system, I will begin with the primary questions about a text and reading and then suggest the possibility of a new literature education.

Atsushi Nakajima's "Junsa-no-iru-fukei" is a short story based on his experiences in Korea where he lived as a junior high-school student. Although it is a mere sketch by the young artist of twenty years, the story existentially puts our national identity into question. Thus it will be a very useful text to think our position in the present international community.

Here I would like to present the practicability of my teaching plan. The text is the Japanese translation of Leo F. Buscaglia's picture book The Fall of Freddie the Leaf and I asked a teacher to read it in actual class according to the teaching plan. The result was successful; first the students' desire to interpret the text was stimulated, and then interactions between them over interpretation (agreement, opposition, indecision and so on) were brought about. Finally the picture book made the students think more spontaneously and seriously about life.

This is a report of my Japanese language class at junior high school. On the assumption that reading in class is a collective and dynamic experience, I have made an attempt to examine the formation of each individual student's reading in the group. Active reading is important. For, I believe, the experience of literary language is indispensable for the renovation of our worn-out social language.

Here I will deal with the mode of our receptions and interpretations of representations in this complex system of the present-day mass media. My argument will be centered on the effect of video games which are rapidly getting more popular. The point is to consider what kind of information we receive in the virtual images of games, how we interpret it, and in what sense the act of this "virtual reading" is different from or similar to that of reading literary texts.
