In this essay I will consider the developmental process of a child in terms of the reading ability. In a reading class I observed as part of my field work, there was a child who first couldn't read aloud at all but gradually came to make a good reading performance. Following Martin Buber's philosophy, I interpret the process in this way. When the child couldn't read aloud, he was still trapped in his own inner world. Demanded to read aloud in the classroom, he felt that his own self was being threatened from the outside. But once he made up his mind to overcome this anxiety and enter the relations to others (in this case, of course, the teacher's conscientious guidance was an important factor), his self-fashioning had begun. In turn the formation of self made it possible to recognize others, which was expressed in his reading performance.
