The extremely tragic nature of "Kyuketsu-aido-ka," a poem by Kakinomoto-no-Hitomaro, lies in the narrator's vain belief that his dead lover is still alive and he can see her again someday. In terms of poetical effects, however, the topic of the lover's death enables the poet to successfully express an ultimate form of love between the dead and the living. Thus it should be reconsidered not as a mere dirge but as a poem of tragic love.

"Amayo-no-sinasadame," an essay-like episode in the Hahakigi part of Genji-monogatari, has several male characters who narrate their own amorous adventures. Although those narrators develop their ideas about what female sexuality is, in the very act they unintentionally betray their own male sexuality. As they talk more about the opposite sex, their discourses show more of what not women but men think of love, marriage, and sex. The discourses also show the power relations between the men as is seen in their different reactions to the same topic.

Among the ukiyo-zoshi chapbooks written in the Hoei Period are a group of stories with "yakei" in their titles. The obsolete word is a compound of "yaro" (male prostitutes) and "keisei" (female prostitutes). The leading figure of this genre is Ejima-Kiseki. Those stories reflect the "yakei" controversy of this age in which woman's or man's superiority in prostitution was hotley discussed. Thus Ejima's work shows not only the literary trend of his age but also the conflicting definitions of prostitution and sexuality in the society.

Takai-Kito's two essays about poetics - "Korai-myomoku" prefaced to his collection of haiku poems Tukeai-tebiki-zuru and "Sisetu" - have a peculiar asymmetry in content. While in the essays Takai introduces a great variety of poetical schools and their manners, he seldom mentions his own school and manners. The reason is this; Takai respected his mentor Yosa-Buson whose style was quite free from any manners, but at the same time he himself was greatly interested in acquiring manners. The peculiarity of his poetics comes exactly from such ambivalence toward mannerism.

Both of Suiin Emi's "Junin-giri" and Katai Tayama's Juemon-no-saigo are based on the same case of arson and murder, but they are completely different in narrative style from each other. While the former story uses the criminal himself as narrator who tells in flashback what happened, the latter is dominated by the omniscient narrator who reconstructs the case by means of rumor, testimony, conjecture, and many other pieces of information. The difference between the two stories can be explained by "verisimilitude" which had become a dominant literary concept in the mid-Meiji Period.

Fuyo Oguri became famous for writing Seishun, but his works after the novel were not so much popular and sometimes severely criticized. In 1909, however, when the sale of "Ane-no-Imouto" was banned for its immorality, both the author and the story were vehemently defended by the literary circle. At that time not only his book but many others were suppressed, and a variety of discourses were produced over such prohibition. Those discourses were different in expression, but interestingly enough they seem to have been articulated on the same assumption that literature should be free from any social conventions. Placed in this web of the discourses, "Ane-no-Imouto" is found to be one of the moments for the redefinition and reconfiguration of literature activated by the society's repressive measures on literary works.

Junichiro Tanizaki was so keenly interested in films that he was actually involved in film-making. This is a famous episode in the author's career, but it may not be so widely known that he was also interested in and influenced by art photography. In fact Tanizaki was more than a mere amateur photographer; he not only took pictures but also developed and printed them by himself. What is more important, photography affected the style of his works written in the Taisho Period. Here I will read a photographic moment in his literary works.
