As is well known, Yoshu Mizuno introduced Kizen Sasaki to Kunio Yanagida and played an important role in the completion of Yanagida's major work Tono-monogatari. It was through a keen interest in ghost tales that the three became acquainted with each other. As Yanagida researched on the legends of the mountain people and Mizuno specialized in spiritualism, each of them had a different approach to ghost tales. But old ghost tales undoubtedly worked as the intellectual ground of the age, on which their works were built.

"Hyaku-monogatari" was a popular pastime in the Edo Period in which people gathered in a dimly lighted room and each of them told a ghost tale in turn. With the modernization of Japan the practice vanished, but Ogai Mori, Kyoka Izumi, Kido Okamoto, and many other modern writers wrote about it in their stories. To those writers the decline of the pastime seemed to be in a symbolical relation to the loss of the sense of community. The aim of this article is to treat several modern "hyaku-monogatari" stories, especially ones by Kyoka Izumi, and to show the historical and cultural background behind them.

In the folklore of the western part of Japan there was a legend of Kudan, a monster with a human face and a bovine body. Although it was orally circulated in the area between the Meiji and the early Showa Periods, today the legend has totally disappeared. The figure of Kudan originated from farmers' faith in a god with the head of a bull who was said to protect them from bad fortune and promise a rich harvest. As the agricultural community was undermined by industrialization and the faith gradually lost its social function, the god was transformed into the monster in public imagination. Finally the advanced stage of modernization with fewer opportunities to see cows in daily life put an end to its historical role.

While something mysterious gains reality in the course of repetition of rumor, the self-growing movement of rumor itself often turns out to be a mystery. Rumor about mystery can be easily changed into rumor as mystery. In other words, the act of communication potentially entails something uncanny and irrational. Here I will think of this problem with Natsuhiko Kyogoku's Ubume-no-natsu and "Kowai," Ogai Mori's "Hyaku-monogatari," Ryunosuke Akutagawa's "Giwaku," and some other stories. Those literary texts explicitly show such "mysterious" paradox inherent in rumor and also its function of fusing the modern and the pre-modern.

What does the act of gazing at horror mean in a mystery story? In an attempt to answer this question, here I will consider the representation of horror in Mystery-no-keifu by Secho Matsumoto, a mystery writer well-known for his style of dealing with social problems. In the novel the author indicates the dynamism in which class and racial prejudices breed a sense of horror. He exposes the politics of discrimination in an unconscious way underlying a gaze at horror.

Shigeru Mizuki had made a long series of horror comics called the Kitaro stories for rental libraries before he published Ge-Ge-Ge-no-Kitaro in the weekly comic magazine Shonen Magazine. In the ur-Kitaro series one can often find a strange relation between a city and the other world. Kitaro, a boy with a supernatural power, was born and lives in Chofu city, Tokyo. The existence of the boy in the city is something extraordinary in everyday life, and in the midst of the ordinary place occur many strange and preternatural events. Thus in the Kitaro stories this world and the other world, the familiar and the uncanny, are connected with each other in unmediated fashion. As will be shown in this article, it also reflects the author's outlook on life in his early career as comic artist.

The point of this article is to examine the concept of fear in Kazuo Umezu's early comics in the light of the three characteristics of his works; folkishness, strangeness, and fantasticality. Umezu successfully integrated the three elements into the genre "horror comics," in which fear is emphasized as the fundamental principle all other human emotions are subject to. His stress on the comprehensive nature of fear is related both to his idea of perspective in composition and to his ontological philosophy about the representative power of art.
