A gender distribution in the dirges of Manyo-shit indicates that the proportion of songs of a woman mourning over her lost lover is large in the early poems whereas in the later ones that of dirges dedicated to dead women becomes remarkably dominant. Moreover, the songs of a woman's death are more literary and tasteful than the early songs in which a man's actual death is rather matter-of-factly described. The development corresponds to the formation of the subject/object relation between man and woman in which she became an object to be looked at and her death came to be appreciated as a poetical theme.

The first part of Taihei-ki has a distorted narrative structure. It is centered on the rise of the Emperor Godaigo's aristocratic regime and the decline of the Kamakura government by samurai warriors, but strangely enough it ends as quite a different story of the Genji Family's triumph over the Heike Family. As the keyword "jyokyu" shows, however, the author could powerfully unite these apparently unrelated materials into a single narrative by skillfully arranging the political viewpoints of both the aristocracy and the samurai warriors in the critical period.

In this article I will discuss a Japanese legend about Yang Guifei which was very popular between the medieval and the early modern times. According to the legend, the Goddess of Atsuta was reborn into a woman who was none other than Yang Guifei. As one of the earliest discourses on the extraordinary legend there is a simple description of it in "Genso-kotei-no-koto" in the second volume of Soga-monogatari. In the course of time, however, while it was adapted for a Noh song or it was re-exported to Yang Guifei's country China, the legend began to show a peculiar development and change its content.

In the Asano Library edition of Hachi-katsuki at the Hiroshima Central Library, the process of making picture books is minutely described. Like the notes written on the back cover of the book, the same literary devise as is used in Yoshitsune-ki, instructions to the illustrator can be found on the back sides of pictures. The way of instructing is not only interesting but also important because it greatly helps us understand the way of composing the picture books of the Nara Period.
