Yamatai-shi, the influential book of prophecy written in the Middle Ages, has been often annotated on through various ages, and each annotation mirrors the atmosphere of each period. In the old annotation of the Yomei-bunko edition it is pointed out that Prince Shotoku's discourse about the Japanese origin of Buddhism was actually based on the tale of ancestors by Prince Rinsei of Korea. Yamatai-shi-bengi, an annotation text published in the Edo Period, is not merely a glossary of medieval language, but there Yamatai-shi is interpreted as a book which predictably described the history of civil wars. Tetsuji Takechi's annotation in his Yamatai-no-uta reflects an apocalyptical anxiety strongly felt in the 1970s.

The aim of this article is to describe the making of Roueikou-chu, Oe-no-Masafusa's annotation on Wakan-rouei-shu. Oe annotated on the collection of poems while editing it by order of the ex-Emperor Sirakawa. In his editorial and annotating work Oe selected poems most suitable for novice poets. For, as is shown in his frequent references to the popular way of writing poems, he wanted to teach them how to make or appreciate poems through the collection.

The point of this article is to analyze the descriptions related to Japan in the first volume of Kansho-sho by Jikuun-Toren, which is now in the Kyoto University Library, and then to have a glimpse of the methodology of annotation on Chinese writings during the Muromachi Period. Jikuun's annotations strongly reflect his view of the contemporary social conditions and his eagerness to educate the coming generation. While thinking of the annotator's style in terms of the general way of annotating of the age, I will also consider why Kiyohara-Senken and his son transcribed the annotation and what the act of transcribing it meant to them.

It is well-known that the tale of Madam Lee or a story generally known as "Hangonko" had a broad influence on medieval literature from major works like Genji-monogatari to minor war narratives and fables. But it is little known that the tale itself was based on another text called "Shingafu," the first book of Yogaku-shibu-no-sho. Here I will trace the tale to its source beyond the boundary of the history of annotation. This article will serve as a preface to my coming article "Kinjitsu-teizei-go: A Study on the Biographies of Filial Children."

In the late Muromachi Period, the apprentice monks at the colleges of the Kanto Tendai denomination were energetically engaged in developing, accumulating, and perpetuating Buddhist knowledge. One of their academic activities was to annotate on the scriptures. A book of scriptural annotation written at one college was often introduced to another college where the student monks studied the book and created their own annotation text out of it. In this article I will make explicit the role of annotation work played in the religious world for the accumulation and preservation of knowledge.

Ise-monogatari-nangi-chu is an esoteric, eccentric, but by no means obscure annotation on Ise-monogatari. For instance, it had no small influence on Getsurin-sho, Jinkei-sho and other works. The edition new possessed by the Tenri Library is most influential among several editions of the book. The aim of this article is to examine a literary heritage left by the annotation and at the same time to surmise the possible existence of another edition which is related to the Reizei Family edition but different from any extant ones.

Here I will treat annotations on medieval literature mainly with the two texts Soga-monogatari and Yokozabo-monogatari. But my interest is not exclusively in literature. Rather with the examples of the literary works I would like to show the function and potentiality of annotation which is not restricted to literature but widely effective in other genres. This article is a small step toward writing a history of medieval annotations in general.
