There are seven pictures within a picture of "Susuki-ni-cho" in the Shibukawa edition of Otogi-bunko. With his theory of pictorial codes Hideo Kuroda interprets them to symbolize separation or death. But after examining not only the textual parts of Otogi-bunko but also the Nara illustrated books, the "maki-e" designs of the time, and other sources, I have come to the conclusion that the pictures refer to women's cruel fate. Thus the figures of the butterflies represent women themselves who are destined to suffer.

The Bunsei edition of Genpei-seisui-ki published in 1665 is very interesting, for it manages to have the story and the illustrations elaborately interact with each other. The iconic treatment of illustrations is also characteristic of it. Such an effectual method of illustrating has much to do with the fact that the text was originally written as a chronicle which describes the turbulent period from the Genpei War to the establishment of the Kamakura government.

Sanjuroku-nin-kyoka-sen and Kokon-kyoka-bukuro are the anthologies of kyoka poems published in the Tenmei Period, and each of them has a portrait of Ota-Nanba in it. Interestingly enough, both portraits show the popular writer holding one of his knees with his head down. The anthologies belong to the genre called "yatsushi," adaptations of canonical texts for the common readers. Therefore the portraits must have been modeled on the image of Fujiwara-no-Teika in Hyakunin-isshu-zo-san-sho, one of the major illustrated anthologies of poems. In this way, the "yatsushi" books of the Edo Period parodied the classical works not only in literary style but also in the mode of visual art.

The illustrations and pictures of "yomihon" storybooks sometimes give important clues to the understanding of how they were plotted and constructed. In Santo-Kyoden's Uki-botan-zenden, for instance, some illustrations in the first part of the story help the reader to know the development of the second part in advance. Trivial as they seem to be, such hints may lead to some new discovery. To demonstrate it, here I will interpret the illustrations of the storybook, especially the three pictures of peony flowers.

The aim of this article is to trace the historical development of "Nihon-bashi" as an aesthetic sign. In their studies of art history, Jtizo Suzuki and Junichi Okubo already made it explicit how the bridge like Edo Castle and Mount Fuji had been turned into a sign during the Edo Period. Here I will reconsider the process in the light of literary study and describe the end of the bridge's role as a sign in the rapid modernization of the Meiji Period.
