We have taken up several cyanine dyes capable of forming the J-aggregate in the monolayer assemblies (LB films); thiacarbocyanine dye (Th (φ)), naphthothiacarbocyanine dyes (Nap (Et), Nap (φ)), quinocyanine dyes (Pic, Sch), oxacyanine dye (Oxa), thiacyanine dye (Tha). We have fabricated the mixed J-aggregate in the LB films incorporating two kinds of dyes having similar molecular structure; Th (φ) +Nap (φ), Oxa+Tha, Nap (Et) + Nap (φ), Pic + Sch. A single J-band was evident in the Th (φ)/Nap (φ)/C
20 LB film and the Nap (Et)/Nap (φ)/C
20 LB film. On the other hand, two J-bands were observed in the Oxa/Tha/HD LB film and the Pic/Sch/C
20 LB film. A coherent potential approximation (CPA) has been introduced to examine absorption spectra of the mixed J-aggregates. It has been proposed that the combinations: Th (φ) + Nap (φ) and Nap (Et) + Nap (φ) yield an amalgamation-type (HA) aggregate, while the combination: Oxa + Tha could form a persistence-type (HP) aggregate. The combination: Pic+ Sch seems to have an ambiguous character between the HA- and the HP-aggregates.
