JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSTamron Co., Ltd. was founded in Urawa City, Saitama Prefecture in 1950 with the aim of manufacturing camera lens- es and other products. In 1957, it released the 135 mm F/4.5 as an interchangeable photographic lens. Thereafter, re- sponding to improvements in camera functionality, it developed distinctive lenses such as 90 mm macro lenses and small, high-magnification lenses. In 1998, it acquired Bronica Corporation, which manufactured and sold distinctive medium-format cameras, and in 2000 released the RF645. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSColor labs, which developed and printed color photographs, emerged after World War II to keep pace with Japan's rapid economic growth, and developed as the demand for photography grew. During this growth process, there were challenges such as price competition and the rise of minilab stores, but they managed to manage the company. This article describes the birth of photography, its introduction to Japan, and the photographic techniques used from the end of the Edo period to the end of the Meiji period, as well as introducing some of the pioneers is the history of business photography in Japan. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSOverviews of photography-related research since 1991 at universities to which members of the Japan Society of Photography and Imaging belong, including Tokyo Polytechnic University, Yamaguchi Institute of Science Tokyo, Tokyo University of Science(formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology), and other universities were introduced in this article. Tokyo Polytechnic University has conducted research on the development mechanisms of silver halide photography and the preparation of silver halides until 2007, and image-forming materials such as organic electroluminescence (EL)and conductive polymers were studying in recent years. Yamaguchi Tokyo University of Science has been conducting research on catalysts, liquid crystal devices, thermoelectric conversion devices, and other topics since the mid-2010s.
